Well done.

Comment on What is the Best Concrete Stain by Chad - concrete consultant http://www.stonecraftfloors.com/best-concrete-stain#comment-121 Fri, 18 Nov 2011 19:54:13 +0000 http://www.stonecraftfloors.com/?p=5071#comment-121 That is a great article to explain the differences in concrete flooring options. Many people think that polished concrete and stained concrete are one in the same….this isn’t the case as you explain in this article.

As a concrete consultant I think it is best to explain to your client their options and what is in their best interest as far as use of the floor and cost. This article did a nice job of that

The radiant floor heat shouldn’t be thought of as a “drying agent”. It just heats the thermal mass of the concrete. “expansion”, or what we call “joint activation” is why you put in saw cuts. This has nothing to do with the floor heat, but more to do with soils and subgrade.

Installing any concrete floor which is to recieve a coating, topping, or floor convering without installing a vapor barriier is not a good idea…..especially on this scale. If you are pouring 50 to 100k sq foot floors and a lot of them there is a little diff. math on thought process.

Scott, vapor barriers must be used on all “on grade” slabs. This will control moisture from being pushed up through the floor. Concrete does expand and contract, and the structure of the floor should always be poured with this in mind (basic flat workers knowledge in smaller scale projects). Constant temperature is always recommended with radiant floor heat. Radiant heat isn’t meant to adjust the temperature a few degrees here in there, but to maintain an average temperature and use another quicker heat recovery system for minor adjustments. Epoxy coatings over radiant heat floors work great.

If the radiant heater in the floor is only used occasionally, can this cause expansion and contraction of the concrete, or sweating that could lift the coating? Any experience or is it recommended to use a thermostat and always maintain a constant temperature?

I can’t stress enough how important the prep work you spoke about is to a good epoxy job. Grinding the floor for prep as you did for this floor is mandatory.

I agree. I’ve been in sheds with heaters and the air was warm, but the cold coming through the concrete made me boots cold over time and I was cold. If your feet are cold, your cold.

I love the look of epoxy over concrete, and the feel of it with radiant heat is amazing, especially if you are barefoot.
